ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੈ ਮਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਠਉਰਾ ॥

ਸਿਮਰਹੁ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਤਿ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਅਵਰ ਤਿਆਗਹੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਉਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਮਝੇ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਸਹਸੀ ॥

ਬਿਨਾਂ ਸਤ ਦਾ ਭੇਦ ਸਤਗੁਰ ਜਾਣੇ ਅਤੇ ਜੁੜੇ, ਜਮ ਮਤਲੱਬ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾਲ ਦਾ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਦੁੱਖ ਹੀ ਸਹਿੰਦਾ ਰਹੇਗਾ

ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਾਧਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਸਤਗੁਰ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ।

ਮੂਰਖ ਹੰਕਾਰੀ ਹਾਥੀ ਵਾਂਗ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਮਨਮੁੱਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੱਤ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਧਰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਨੇਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਬਣੀਆ ਹੋਈਆ ਹੈ

ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੁਰਤ ਜਾਂ ਮਨ ਦਾ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਮੰਨੇ ਹੋਏ ਬੁਨਿਆਦੀ 5 ਤੱਤਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਭਾਵ ਪਦਾਰਥਵਾਦੀ ਮਨ ਹੈ ।

ਸਾਕਤੁ ਲੋਭੀ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਮੂੜਾ ॥

ਜੋ ਮਨ ਸ਼ਕਤੀ, ਦੇਵੀ, ਪ੍ਰਕਿਰਤੀ ਜਾਂ ਕਹਿ ਲਓ ਕੁਦਰਤ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਮੁੱਖ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਇਸਟ ਮੰਨਦਾ ਹੈ, ਏਸ ਮੱਤ ਰੱਖਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਕਤ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਕੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਲੋਭ ਵਸ ਹੋ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ।
The mind that keeps shakti, devi, prakriti or nature as supreme, the one who holds this belief is called a Shakata, which a human does under the influence of greed of power and becomes a fool.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੈ ਮਨੁ ਰੂੜਾ ॥੩॥

ਪਰ ਦੂਜੇ ਪਾਸੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਅਤੇ ਗੂੜਾ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਮਤਲਬ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਸੁੱਧ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ
On the other hand, the mind meditate on GurMukh Naam, is exalted and deeply beautiful, meaning it is pure and immaculate.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਨੁ ਅਸਥਾਨੇ ਸੋਈ ॥

ਜਿਹਦਾ ਮਨ ਗੁਰਮੁੱਖ ਹੈ, ਉਹਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਦਾ ਸਥਾਨ ਮਤਲੱਬ ਅਸਲ ਹਰਮੰਦਰ ਜਾਂ ਕਾਬਾ ਹੈ।
Whose mind is Gurmukh, within them is the dwelling place of the Lord, meaning the true Harmander or Kaaba.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣਿ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋਈ ॥
gurmukh tirabhavan sojhee hoiee ||
ਜੋ ਮਨ ਗੁਰਮੁੱਖ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਰੂਪੀ ਗੁਪਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
The mind that becomes Gurmukh attains understanding of the hidden Maya of the world made up of 3 dimensions (plus time the maya) .
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਜੋਗੀ ਭੋਗੀ ਤਪੁ ਤਾਪੈ ॥

ਪਹਿਲੇ ਅਰਥ). ਮਨਮੁੱਖ ਮਨ ਕਦੀ ਯੋਗੀਆਂ ਵਾਂਗ ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ, ਕਦੇ ਅਮੀਰਾਂ ਵਾਂਗ ਭੋਗ ਵਿਲਾਸ, ਤੇ ਕਦੇ ਹੱਠ ਯੋਗ ਤਪਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਾਇਆਜਾਲ ਲਗਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਦੂਸਰੇ ਅਰਥ), ਮਨ ਦਾ ਗੁਰਮੁੱਖ ਹੋ ਜਾਣਾ ਹੀ ਅਸਲ ਯੋਗ ਚ ਆਉਣਾ, ਹਰ ਰਸ ਭੋਗਣਾ, ਅਤੇ ਵਡਾ ਤਪੀ ਹੋਣਾ ਹੈ

ਜਦੋਂ ਕਿ, ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਨੂੰ ਸਰਬ-ਵਿਆਪਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਮ ਚਿਨ੍ਹ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ।
Whereas, to GurMukh the permeating Lord revealed own Identity.
ਮਨੁ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਤਿਆਗੀ ॥
man bairaagee haumai tiaagee ||
ਮਨਮੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਘਰ ਬਾਰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਹੋਣ ਨੂ ਹੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਰਹਿਤ ਹੋਣਾ ਜਾਂ ਹਉਮੈ ਦਾ ਤਿਆਗੀ ਹੋਣਾ ਸਮਝੀ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
The (foolish) Manmukh's mind considers leaving home and hearth to become a vairagi (detached ascetic) equals to becoming Ego free.
ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਮਨਸਾ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਲਾਗੀ ॥
ghaT ghaT manasaa dhubidhaa laagee ||
ਪਰ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਵੀ ਉਹ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਪੂਰਣ ਮਨਸਾ ਚਿੰਬੜੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
But wherever they go, a duality-filled desire remains attached within them.

ਜਦੋਂ ਕਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਵੀ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਓਥੇ ਹੀ ਰਮੇ ਹੋਏ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮ ਰਸਾਇਣ ਦਾ ਸੁਆਦ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ।
Whereas wherever GurMukh goes, they tastes the ever-present SatNaam the Elixir of Life
ਦਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਮਹਲੀ ਹਰਿ ਪਤਿ ਰਾਖੈ ॥੫॥
dhar ghar mahalee har pat raakhai ||5||
ਅਤੇ ਰੱਬ ਉਸ ਗੁਰਮੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਉਹਦੇ ਘਰ ਬਾਰ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਆਦਿ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਬਣਾ ਉਹਦੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮਤਲੱਬ ਹਰ ਭਗਤ ਲਈ ਘਰ ਬਾਰ ਛੱਡਣ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਫਾਇਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਗੋਂ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਹੀ ਵਧਦੀ ਹੈ।
And the God gives peace for that Gurmukh right within his home, household, court, office etc., preserves his honor; meaning that for any philosopher there is no benefit in leaving the household, rather it goes opposite.
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਜਾ ਸੂਰ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਾਮਿ ॥

ਉਹੀ ਮਨ, ਜੇ ਮਨਮੁੱਖ ਹੋ ਜਾਏ ਤਾਂ ਹੰਕਾਰੀ ਰਾਜਾ ਬਣ ਸਦਾ ਅਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਚਲਦੇ ਵਡੇ ਯੁੱਧ ਸੰਗਰਾਮ ਦਾ ਸਿਪਾਹੀ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਅਤੇ ਕਦੇ ਵੀ ਵੀ ਨਿਰੰਤਰ ਸਹਿਜ ਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਪਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
The mind, if become Manmukh, starts acting like a dictator king, constantly remains a soldier in the great war and battle raging within itself, and is never able to enter sustainable peace.
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮਿ ॥

ਦੂਜੇ ਪਾਸੇ ਉਹੀ ਮਨ ਸਤਗੁਰ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਅਪਣੀ ਸੂਰਤ ਜੋੜ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਜੋ ਸਹਿਜ ਆਨੰਦ ਮੰਨਦਾ ਹੈ।
On the other hand, that same mind, by uniting its consciousness to the Satguru Naam, experiences fearlessness and experiences the sustainable state of intuitive bliss.
ਮਾਰੇ ਪੰਚ ਅਪੁਨੈ ਵਸਿ ਕੀਏ ॥
maare pa(n)ch apunai vas ke'ee ||
ਪੰਜਾਂ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਬਲ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਕਾਬੂ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Kills the overwhelming power of five vices or passions and keeps them in its control.
ਹਉਮੈ ਗ੍ਰਾਸਿ ਇਕਤੁ ਥਾਇ ਕੀਏ ॥੬॥

ਇਕ ਨਾਮ ਹਉਮੈ ਨੂ ਮਾਰ ਓਨਾ ਪੰਜਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕੱਠੇ ਕਰ ਅਪਣੇ ਅਧੀਨ ਬੰਨ ਲੈਂਦਾਂ ਹੈ।
Ek Naam destroys Haumai, gathering all those five vices together and binding them under its control.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਾਗ ਸੁਆਦ ਅਨ ਤਿਆਗੇ ॥

ਗੁਰਮੁੱਖ ਮਨ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਆਨ ਰਾਗਾਂ ਸਵਾਦਾਂ ਦਾ ਤਿਆਗੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
The Gurmukh mind becomes a renunciate of rest of musical measures and tastes that cause wandering.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਭਗਤੀ ਜਾਗੇ ॥

ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ahinis har jas gur parasaadh ||
ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ॥੮॥
ghaT ghaT so prabh aadh jugaadh ||8||
ਰਾਮ ਰਸਾਇਣਿ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਤਾ ॥
raam rasain ih man maataa ||
ਸਰਬ ਰਸਾਇਣੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤਾ ॥
sarab rasain gurmukh jaataa ||
ਭਗਤਿ ਹੇਤੁ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਣ ਨਿਵਾਸਾ ॥
bhagat het gur charan nivaasaa ||
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਕੇ ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸਾ ॥੯॥੮॥
