ਜਿਸੁ ਜਲ ਨਿਧਿ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਤੁਮ ਜਗਿ ਆਏ ਸੋ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਗੁਰ ਪਾਹੀ ਜੀਉ ॥

ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਸ ਨਾਮ-ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਦੇ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ (ਜਲ ਨਿਧਿ) ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਇਸ ਸੰਸਾਰ (ਜਗਿ) ਵਿੱਚ ਜਨਮ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਗੁਰੁ (ਕਰਤਾਰ) ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥
O dear! The ocean of divine nectar you came into this world to seek—that immortal elixir is treasured only within the Lord.
ਛੋਡਹੁ ਵੇਸੁ ਭੇਖ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਇਹੁ ਫਲੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥

ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਬਾਹਰੀ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਪਹਿਰਾਵਾ, ਦਿਖਾਵੇ ਦੇ ਭੇਖ, ਅਤੇ ਮਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਚਲਾਕੀਆਂ ਛੱਡ ਦਿਓ ॥ ਇਸ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ (ਦੋ-ਰੁਖ਼ੀ ਚਾਲ, ਜਿੱਥੇ ਬਾਹਰੋਂ ਕੁਝ ਹੋਰ ਤੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਕੁਝ ਹੋਰ ਹੋਵੇ) ਵਿੱਚ ਪਿਆਂ ਉਹ ਨਾਮ-ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਦਾ ਫਲ ਕਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ॥
Shed the outer robes, the masks of piety, and the clever twists of the mind; for within the shadow of duplicity, this divine fruit can never be found.
ਮਨ ਰੇ ਥਿਰੁ ਰਹੁ ਮਤੁ ਕਤ ਜਾਹੀ ਜੀਉ ॥

ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਤੂੰ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਅਡੋਲ ਹੋ ਕੇ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ) ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿ, ਦੇਖੀਂ ਕਿਤੇ (ਨਾਮ-ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਦੀ ਭਾਲ ਵਿੱਚ) ਬਾਹਰ ਨਾ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਫਿਰੇਂ ॥ ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਬਾਹਰ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਕਰਮ-ਕਾਂਡਾਂ ਜਾਂ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੱਭੇਂਗਾ ਤਾਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਦੁੱਖ ਪਾਵੇਂਗਾ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਉਹ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ-ਰਸ ਤੇਰੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਘਰ (ਹਿਰਦੇ) ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ ॥
O my restless mind, stay anchored within; do not wander away.

ਬਾਹਰਿ ਢੂਢਤ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਘਰਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਘਟ ਮਾਹੀ ਜੀਉ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਬਾਹਰ ਲੱਭਣ ਨਾਲ ਬਹੁਤ ਨਿਰਾਸ਼ਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ (ਮਾਇਆ ਭਰਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਹੁਤ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ) ॥ ਇਹ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਾਹਰੋਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਣਾ, ਇਹ ਅੰਸ਼ ਤੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਹੈ ॥ ਰੁਕੋ, ਵਿਚਾਰੋ ॥
If you seek it on the outside, you will only wander into depths of pain; for the immortal nectar flows softly within, right inside your mind. Pause, contemplate.
ਅਵਗੁਣ ਛੋਡਿ ਗੁਣਾ ਕਉ ਧਾਵਹੁ ਕਰਿ ਅਵਗੁਣ ਪਛੁਤਾਹੀ ਜੀਉ ॥

ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਬੁਰਾਈਆਂ, ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਔਗੁਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਦਿਓ ਅਤੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ (ਨੇਕੀ, ਸੱਚ, ਅਤੇ ਨਾਮ-ਸਿਮਰਨ) ਨੂੰ ਗ੍ਰਹਿਣ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਦੌੜੋ (ਉੱਦਮ ਕਰੋ) ॥ ਜੇਕਰ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਔਗੁਣ ਹੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹੋਗੇ, ਅਤੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਜੁੜਦੇ, ਆਖ਼ਰਕਾਰ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਪਛਤਾਉਣਾ ਹੀ ਪਵੇਗਾ ॥
Cast away your flaws and run toward the light of virtue; for if you walk the path of shadows, you will only gather the bitter harvest of regret.
ਸਰ ਅਪਸਰ ਕੀ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਕੀਚ ਬੁਡਾਹੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੨॥
sar apasar kee saar na jaaneh fir fir keech buddaahee jeeau ||2||
ਤੂੰ ਉਸ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਸਰੋਵਰ (ਸਰ - ਨਾਮ-ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਦਾ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ) ਅਤੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਗੰਦੇ ਛੱਪੜ (ਅਪਸਰ - ਨਿਚਲਾ ਥਾਂ ਜਾਂ ਕੁਥਾਂ) ਦੇ ਫਰਕ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦਾ। ਇਸੇ ਅਗਿਆਨਤਾ ਕਰਕੇ ਤੂੰ ਵਾਰ-ਵਾਰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਮੋਹ-ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਗਾਰੇ (ਕੀਚ) ਵਿੱਚ ਡੁੱਬਦਾ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ ॥
Blind to the difference between the pure pool of nectar and the stagnant mire, you plunge over and over again into the suffocating mud of worldly illusion.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਲੋਭ ਬਹੁ ਝੂਠੇ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਨਾਵਹੁ ਕਾਹੀ ਜੀਉ ॥

ਜਿੰਨਾ ਚਿਰ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਅੰਦਰ (ਮਨ ਵਿੱਚ) ਲੋਭ, ਲਾਲਚ ਅਤੇ ਝੂਠ ਦੀ ਬਹੁਤ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਮੈਲ ਭਰੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ, ਉੱਨਾ ਚਿਰ ਬਾਹਰੋਂ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ 'ਤੇ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਜਾਂ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਵਾ ਕੇ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ?
While the heavy stains of greed and falsehood cling deep within your heart, what avails the washing of your outer frame in holy waters?
ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਸਦ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਤਰ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਤਾਹੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥

ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਦੇ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਅਤੇ ਮੈਲ-ਰਹਿਤ (ਨਿਰਮਲ) ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰੋ। ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਜਨਾ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਨਾਮੁ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਹੋਣ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਹਾਂਸਲ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥
Contemplate forever the immaculate Name of the Divine; for when this sacred light unfolds within the mindful seeker, the chains of the world fall away into perfect freedom.
ਪਰਹਰਿ ਲੋਭੁ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕੂੜੁ ਤਿਆਗਹੁ ਸਚੁ ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਹੀ ਜੀਉ ॥

ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਲਾਲਚ (ਲੋਭ), ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਬੁਰਾਈ ਕਰਨੀ (ਨਿੰਦਾ), ਅਤੇ ਝੂਠ (ਕੂੜ) ਪੂਰੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਛੱਡ ਦਿਓ ॥ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਦੇ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਬਚਨਾਂ (ਨਾਮ ਸ਼ਬਦ) ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸੱਚਾ ਨਾਮ-ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰੂਪੀ ਸੱਚਾ ਫਲ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ ॥
Cast away greed, renounce slander, and shed all falsehood from your heart; for only by walking in the light of the word (Naam) will you gather the eternal fruit of Truth.
ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਉ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਲਾਹੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੪॥੯॥

ਹੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜੀਓ! ਜਿਵੇਂ ਆਪ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਹੋਵੇ, ਜਿਵੇਂ ਆਪ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗੇ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਉਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਰੱਖੋ । ਆਪ ਜੀ ਦਾ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪਜੀ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਸਿਫਤ ਸਲਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥
O Beloved Lord! Keep me as it pleases Your Divine Will. Your humble servant Nanak ever sings the praises of Your Sacred Word and Holy Name.
ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਪੰਚਪਦੇ ॥

ਘਰੁ ਦਰੁ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਜੇ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖਹਿ ਜੋ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਲਾਗਾ ॥੧॥

ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਅਨ ਰਸ ਲੋਭਾਨੇ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਹਿ ਅਭਾਗਾ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

ਆਪੇ ਦੁਖ ਸੁਖ ਭੋਗਿ ਭੋਗਾਵੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੋ ਅਨਰਾਗਾ ॥੨॥
aape dhukh sukh bhog bhogaavai gurmukh so anaraagaa ||2||
ਹਰਿ ਰਸ ਊਪਰਿ ਅਵਰੁ ਕਿਆ ਕਹੀਐ ਜਿਨਿ ਪੀਆ ਸੋ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਗਾ ॥
har ras uoopar avar kiaa kaheeaai jin peeaa so tirapataagaa ||
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿਤ ਜਿਨਿ ਇਹੁ ਰਸੁ ਖੋਇਆ ਜਾ ਸਾਕਤ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਲਾਗਾ ॥੩॥
maiaa mohit jin ih ras khoiaa jaa saakat dhuramat laagaa ||3||
ਮਨ ਕਾ ਜੀਉ ਪਵਨਪਤਿ ਦੇਹੀ ਦੇਹੀ ਮਹਿ ਦੇਉ ਸਮਾਗਾ ॥
man kaa jeeau pavanapat dhehee dhehee meh dheau samaagaa ||
ਜੇ ਤੂ ਦੇਹਿ ਤ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਗਾਈ ਮਨੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤੈ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗਾ ॥੪॥
je too dheh ta har ras gaiee man tirapatai har liv laagaa ||4||
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਜਮ ਭਉ ਭਾਗਾ ॥

ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਏ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਭਾਗਾ ॥੫॥੧੦॥
