jab hee saran saadh kee aaio dhuramat sagal binaasee ||
ਜਦੋਂ ਤੋਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ (ਕਰਤੇ ਨੂੰ ਸਨਮੁੱਖ ਹੋਏ ਸਿੱਖ) ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ, ਤਦੋਂ ਤੋਂ ਮੇਰੀ ਖੋਟੀ ਬੁੱਧੀ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਹੈ ॥
Ever since I obtained the company of the Gurmukh (the Sikhs who are oriented toward the Lord), my evil intellect has been dispelled.
ਤਬ ਨਾਨਕ ਚੇਤਿਓ ਚਿੰਤਾਮਨਿ ਕਾਟੀ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਫਾਸੀ ॥੩॥੭॥
tab naanak chetio chi(n)taaman kaaTee jam kee faasee ||3||7||
ਤਦੋਂ ਨਾਨਕ ਨੇ ਮਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਚਿੰਤਾਵਾਂ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਚਿੰਤਾਮਨਿ) ਨੂੰ ਚੇਤੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਸਾਇਆ (ਨਾਮ ਜਪ ਕੀਤਾ), ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਰੱਸੀ ਕੱਟ ਦਿੱਤੀ ॥
Then Nanak enshrined in his memory the Lord who removes all worries of the mind (chanted the Naam), who severed the fear of Angel of Death.

ਹੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ! ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਸ ਇੱਕ ਅਟੱਲ ਸੱਚਾਈ ਨੂੰ ਪੱਕੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਟਿਕਾ ਕੇ ਰੱਖ ਲੈ ॥
O man, grasp this Truth firmly in your mind.
ਸਗਲ ਜਗਤੁ ਹੈ ਜੈਸੇ ਸੁਪਨਾ ਬਿਨਸਤ ਲਗਤ ਨ ਬਾਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
sagal jagat hai jaise supanaa binasat lagat na baar ||1|| rahaau ||
ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਸੰਸਾਰ (ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਰੰਗ-ਤਮਾਸ਼ੇ) ਇੱਕ ਸੁਪਨੇ ਵਰਗਾ ਹੀ ਹੈ ॥ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਜਾਗ ਆਉਣ 'ਤੇ ਸੁਪਨਾ ਗਾਇਬ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਵੇਂ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਨਾਸ ਹੁੰਦਿਆਂ ਬਿਲਕੁਲ ਸਮਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ ॥
The whole world is just like a dream; it will pass away in an instant.
ਬਾਰੂ ਭੀਤਿ ਬਨਾਈ ਰਚਿ ਪਚਿ ਰਹਤ ਨਹੀ ਦਿਨ ਚਾਰਿ ॥
baaroo bheet banaiee rach pach rahat nahee dhin chaar ||
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਬਹੁਤ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਅਤੇ ਰੀਝਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਰੇਤ ਦੀ ਕੰਧ (ਬਾਰੂ ਭੀਤਿ) ਉਸਾਰੇ, ਪਰ ਉਹ ਚਾਰ ਦਿਨ ਵੀ ਟਿਕੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿ ਸਕਦੀ (ਛੇਤੀ ਹੀ ਢਹਿ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ) ॥
Like a wall of sand, built with great care and effort, which does not last even for four days (a short time).
ਤੈਸੇ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਸੁਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੇ ਉਰਝਿਓ ਕਹਾ ਗਵਾਰ ॥੧॥

ਉਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਇਹ ਮਨੁੱਖੀ ਸਰੀਰ ਅਤੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਸੁਖ-ਸਾਧਨ ਹਨ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਿਨ-ਰਾਤ ਬੜੀ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਨਾਲ ਸਜਾਉਂਦਾ-ਸਵਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਇਹ ਆਖ਼ਰਕਾਰ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਸਮਾਂ ਸਾਥ ਨਹੀਂ ਨਿਭਾਉਂਦੇ ॥
Just like that (fragile wall of sand), the pleasures of Maya (materialistic world) are temporary. Why are you entangled in them, you ignorant fool?
ਅਜਹੂ ਸਮਝਿ ਕਛੁ ਬਿਗਰਿਓ ਨਾਹਿਨਿ ਭਜਿ ਲੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ॥
ajahoo samajh kachh bigario naahin bhaj le naam muraar ||
ਤੂੰ ਅਜੇ ਵੀ ਹੋਸ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਆ ਜਾ ਅਤੇ ਸੱਚਾਈ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਲੈ, ਅਜੇ (ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ) ਕੁਝ ਵੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਿਗੜਿਆ ॥ ਜਿੰਨਾ ਵੀ ਸੁਆਸਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਮਾਂ ਬਾਕੀ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਸ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ (ਮੁਰਾਰੀ) ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰ ਲੈ ॥
Understand this even now - it is not yet too late! Chant and vibrate the Name of the Lord.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਿਜ ਮਤੁ ਸਾਧਨ ਕਉ ਭਾਖਿਓ ਤੋਹਿ ਪੁਕਾਰਿ ॥੨॥੮॥
kahu naanak nij mat saadhan kau bhaakhio toh pukaar ||2||8||
ਨੋਵੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਪੁਕਾਰ ਪੁਕਾਰ ਕੇ ਸਾਧੂ ਜਨਾ ਦੀ ਰਾਏ ਦੱਸ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ (ਕਿ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ ਅਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਚੁਗਲ ਤੋਂ ਬਚ) ॥
The Ninth Guru Nanak (Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji) is calling out to humanity again and again, proclaiming the wisdom of the Holy Saints: contemplate the Divine Name (Naam) and rescue yourself from the clutches of worldly illusions (Maya).

ਇਹ ਜਗਿ ਮੀਤੁ ਨ ਦੇਖਿਓ ਕੋਈ ॥
eeh jag meet na dhekhio koiee ||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮੈਂ ਇਸ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਕੋਈ ਮਿੱਤਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਜੋ ਤੋੜ ਤੱਕ ਸਾਥ ਨਿਭਾਉਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੋਵੇ ॥
In this world, I have not found any true friend.
ਸਗਲ ਜਗਤੁ ਅਪਨੈ ਸੁਖਿ ਲਾਗਿਓ ਦੁਖ ਮੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

ਸਾਰੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਕੇਵਲ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੁਖ-ਆਰਾਮ ਅਤੇ ਸੁਆਰਥ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਲੱਗੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ, ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉੱਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਭਾਰੀ ਦੁੱਖ ਜਾਂ ਮੁਸੀਬਤ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸੱਚਾ ਸਾਥੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣਦਾ ॥ ਰੁਕੋ, ਵਿਚਾਰੋ ॥
The whole world is attached to its own pleasures, and when trouble comes, no one is there with you. Pause and Contemplate.
ਦਾਰਾ ਮੀਤ ਪੂਤ ਸਨਬੰਧੀ ਸਗਰੇ ਧਨ ਸਿਉ ਲਾਗੇ ॥
dhaaraa meet poot sanaba(n)dhee sagare dhan siau laage ||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ, ਮਿੱਤਰ, ਪੁੱਤਰ ਅਤੇ ਰਿਸ਼ਤੇਦਾਰ—ਇਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਕੇਵਲ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਧਨ-ਦੌਲਤ ਅਤੇ ਸਮਰੱਥਾ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥
Family including wives, friends, children, and relatives—all are attached to you only for your wealth.
ਜਬ ਹੀ ਨਿਰਧਨ ਦੇਖਿਓ ਨਰ ਕਉ ਸੰਗੁ ਛਾਡਿ ਸਭ ਭਾਗੇ ॥੧॥
jab hee niradhan dhekhio nar kau sa(n)g chhaadd sabh bhaage ||1||
ਜਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਧਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾਂ (ਗ਼ਰੀਬ/ਕੰਗਾਲ) ਦੇਖਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤਾਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸਾਥ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਦੂਰ ਭੱਜ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਭਾਵ ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਸੁਆਰਥ ਦੇ ਮੁਸੀਬਤ ਵੇਲੇ ਬਾਂਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਫੜਦਾ ॥
The very moment they see a person become poor, they all abandon his company and run away.
ਕਹਂਉ ਕਹਾ ਯਿਆ ਮਨ ਬਉਰੇ ਕਉ ਇਨ ਸਿਉ ਨੇਹੁ ਲਗਾਇਓ ॥
kaha(n)au kahaa yiaa man baure kau in siau neh lagaio ||
ਮੈਂ ਇਸ ਕਮਲੇ ਅਤੇ ਝੱਲੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਕੀ ਆਖਾਂ (ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਸਮਝਾਵਾਂ)? ਇਸ ਨੇ (ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਜਾਣਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਵੀ) ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਅਤੇ ਸੁਆਰਥੀ ਸੰਸਾਰਿਕ ਸਾਕ-ਸੰਬੰਧੀਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਪਿਆਰ ਪਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ (ਜੋ ਮੁਸੀਬਤ ਵੇਲੇ ਸਾਥ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਭੱਜ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ) ॥
What can I say to this crazy mind? It has fallen in love with those (transient and self-serving worldly relations).
ਦੀਨਾ ਨਾਥ ਸਕਲ ਭੈ ਭੰਜਨ ਜਸੁ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਬਿਸਰਾਇਓ ॥੨॥
dheenaa naath sakal bhai bha(n)jan jas taa ko bisaraio ||2||
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਪ੍ਭੂ ਗ਼ਰੀਬਾਂ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ (ਦੀਨਾ ਨਾਥ) ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਡਰਾਂ-ਸਹਿਮਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ (ਸਕਲ ਭੈ ਭੰਜਨ) ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਮਨ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ਰ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ (ਜਸੁ) ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਭੁਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ॥
The Lord is the Protector of the poor, and the Destroyer of all fears; yet, you have forgotten His Praises.
ਸੁਆਨ ਪੂਛ ਜਿਉ ਭਇਓ ਨ ਸੂਧਉ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਜਤਨੁ ਮੈ ਕੀਨਉ ॥
suaan poochh jiau bhio na soodhau bahut jatan mai keenau ||
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕੁੱਤੇ ਦੀ ਪੂਛ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੱਧਾ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਚਾਹੇ ਕਿੰਨੇ ਵੀ ਯਤਨ (ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ਾਂ) ਕੀਤੇ ਜਾਣ, ਉਹ ਕਦੇ ਸਿੱਧੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ; ਉਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਮੈਂ (ਇਸ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਧਾਰਨ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਮੋੜਨ ਲਈ) ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੇ ਜਤਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਵੇਖ ਲਏ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਆਪਣੀ ਟੇਢੀ ਚਾਲ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਅਤੇ ਬੁਰਾਈਆਂ ਦੀ ਆਦਤ) ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਸਿੱਧੇ ਰਾਹ 'ਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ ॥
Like a dog's tail, which never straightens out no matter how many efforts are made; (similarly) I have tried so many ways, but this mind does not turn straight.
ਨਾਨਕ ਲਾਜ ਬਿਰਦ ਕੀ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਤੁਹਾਰਉ ਲੀਨਉ ॥੩॥੯॥
naanak laaj biradh kee raakhahu naam tuhaarau leenau ||3||9||
ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ: ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ (ਇਸ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਦੇ ਝੂਠੇ ਮੋਹ-ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਹਾਰ ਕੇ) ਕੇਵਲ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ॥ ਹੁਣ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਓਸ ਮੁੱਢ ਕਦੀਮ ਦੇ ਦਿਆਲੂ ਸੁਭਾਅ (ਬਿਰਦ) ਦੀ ਲਾਜ (ਸ਼ਰਮ) ਰੱਖ ਲਵੋ, ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਤਹਿਤ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਸ਼ਰਨ ਆਏ ਹੋਏ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਉਧਾਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋ, ਅਤੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਦੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾ ਲਵੋ ॥
Says Nanak, please, Lord, uphold the honor of Your innate nature (to save those who seek refuge); I have taken the anchor of Your Name.

ਸਾਚ ਛਾਡਿ ਕੈ ਝੂਠਹ ਲਾਗਿਓ ਜਨਮੁ ਅਕਾਰਥੁ ਖੋਇਓ ॥
saach chhaadd kai jhooTheh laagio janam akaarath khoio ||
ਕਰਿ ਪਰਪੰਚ ਉਦਰ ਨਿਜ ਪੋਖਿਓ ਪਸੁ ਕੀ ਨਿਆਈ ਸੋਇਓ ॥੧॥
kar parapa(n)ch udhar nij pokhio pas kee niaaiee soio ||1||
ਰਾਮ ਭਜਨ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਹਾਥਿ ਬਿਕਾਨਾ ॥
raam bhajan kee gat nahee jaanee maiaa haath bikaanaa ||
ਉਰਝਿ ਰਹਿਓ ਬਿਖਿਅਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਬਉਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਤਨੁ ਬਿਸਰਾਨਾ ॥੨॥
aurajh rahio bikhian sa(n)g bauraa naam ratan bisaraanaa ||2||
ਰਹਿਓ ਅਚੇਤੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਿਓ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਅਉਧ ਸਿਰਾਨੀ ॥
rahio achet na chetio gobi(n)dh birathaa aaudh siraanee ||
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਰਦੁ ਪਛਾਨਉ ਭੂਲੇ ਸਦਾ ਪਰਾਨੀ ॥੩॥੧੦॥
kahu naanak har biradh pachhaanau bhoole sadhaa paraanee ||3||10||

ਜੋ ਨਰੁ ਦੁਖ ਮੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਨਹੀ ਮਾਨੈ ॥

ਸੁਖ ਸਨੇਹੁ ਅਰੁ ਭੈ ਨਹੀ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਕੰਚਨ ਮਾਟੀ ਮਾਨੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
sukh saneh ar bhai nahee jaa kai ka(n)chan maaTee maanai ||1|| rahaau ||
ਨਹ ਨਿੰਦਿਆ ਨਹ ਉਸਤਤਿ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਲੋਭੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਅਭਿਮਾਨਾ ॥
neh ni(n)dhiaa neh usatat jaa kai lobh moh abhimaanaa ||
ਹਰਖ ਸੋਗ ਤੇ ਰਹੈ ਨਿਆਰਉ ਨਾਹਿ ਮਾਨ ਅਪਮਾਨਾ ॥੧॥
harakh sog te rahai niaarau naeh maan apamaanaa ||1||
ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਸਗਲ ਤਿਆਗੈ ਜਗ ਤੇ ਰਹੈ ਨਿਰਾਸਾ ॥
aasaa manasaa sagal tiaagai jag te rahai niraasaa ||
ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਜਿਹ ਪਰਸੈ ਨਾਹਨਿ ਤਿਹ ਘਟਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਨਿਵਾਸਾ ॥੨॥
kaam karodh jeh parasai naahan teh ghaT braham nivaasaa ||2||
ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਜਿਹ ਨਰ ਕਉ ਕੀਨੀ ਤਿਹ ਇਹ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਪਛਾਨੀ ॥
gur kirapaa jeh nar kau keenee teh ieh jugat pachhaanee ||
ਨਾਨਕ ਲੀਨ ਭਇਓ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿਉ ਜਿਉ ਪਾਨੀ ਸੰਗਿ ਪਾਨੀ ॥੩॥੧੧॥
