In this profound Ashtapadi, Guru Arjan Dev Ji systematically examines and deconstructs every conventional method through which mortals attempt to achieve spiritual liberation through personal doership. The Guru addresses ritualistic recitations, scriptural debates, physical austerities (hatha yoga, internal cleansing, breath manipulation), ascetic renunciation (vows of silence, eating from hands, forest-dwelling nudity), geographic pilgrimages, and even extreme sacrificial rites like the karvat (getting sawn in half at Kashi). None of these practices dismantle the core malady of the soul: egotism (ahankar). In fact, they feed spiritual pride, leaving the five vices intact and entangling the mind deeper into duality (dubidha).
Similarly, lavish philanthropic donations, rigid liturgical rites (khat-karma, prostrations), physical mastery over eighty-four yogic postures, or worldly royal majesty cannot purchase Divine communion. Worldly power without inner remembrance leads solely to spiritual ruin.
The turning point of the hymn lies in the Rahaao (Pause): authentic spiritual life begins where personal ego ends. The seeker must abandon the illusion of self-accomplished salvation, fall humbly at the Sovereign Lord’s threshold, and beg for Bibek Budh—the intellect of true spiritual discernment. The highest and most sublime of all deeds (siri karman kai karma) is singing the praises of the Creator in the company of the holy (Saadh Sangat). When the Merciful Lord showers His grace, the seeker’s mind is permanently dyed in the color of Divine Love and eternal peace.

man kaamanaa teerath jai basio sir karavat dharaae ||
In the mind's desire of reward, if the seeker settle in Hindu pilgrimage of Kashi Banars and even put his head under the famous saw there to give life sacrifice (there is famous human sacrifice Hindu ritual, where it is believed that if you get behead with that specific saw blade, the person will get salvation)
man kee mail na utarai ieh bidh je lakh jatan karaae ||3||
The filth of Ego from mind won't washed away with these ways, no matter how many times you repeat them.
kanik kaaminee haivar gaivar bahu bidh dhaan dhaataaraa ||
As prescribed you may be a person of bounty may give gifts of many sorts, like gold, women including own wife, cows, horses and elephants.
a(n)n basatr bhoom bahu arape neh mileeaai har dhuaaraa ||4||
And offers meals , clothes and lands in abundance, but the Gate of Lord won't appear doing all the above.
poojaa arachaa ba(n)dhan dda(n)ddaut khaT karamaa rat rahataa ||
Then remain completely absorbed in performing ritualistic worship (pooja), offering flowers and incense (archa), bowing down in salutations (bandan), prostrating themselves flat or role on the ground (dandaut), and constantly practicing the six religious rites of Hinduism.
hau hau karat ba(n)dhan meh pariaa neh mileeaai ieh jugataa ||5||
After doing all of above, the seeker in still trapped in delusion and full of ego instead gets trapped e bonds of ego; these are certainly not the correct methods or ways to meet and unite with the True Lord.
jog sidh aasan chauraaseeh e bhee kar kar rahiaa ||
Become master(sidh) of all the eighty-four (84) yogic postures and repeat them over and over again until they are exhausted .
You may perlongs the lifespan, take rebirth again and again to do all mentioned above repeatedly, these fruitless efforts won't achieve union or companionship with the Divine.
raaj leelaa raajan kee rachanaa kariaa hukam afaaraa ||
A person may enjoy the royal plays, pleasures, and luxuries of kings, and in his unyielding pride, issue absolute commands that no one can challenge or stop.
sej sohanee cha(n)dhan choaa narak ghor kaa dhuaaraa ||7||
and have beautiful, comfortable bed with canopies to sleep on and applies fragrant sandalwood paste and perfumes to their body. Still you will be at the gate of deepest, darkest hell.
har keerat saadhasa(n)gat hai sir karaman kai karamaa ||
Joining the congregation of true Saints to sing the praises of the Divine (and meditate on the Naam) is the highest and supreme deed and only way above all other religious rituals in the world.
kahu naanak tis bhio paraapat jis purab likhe kaa lahanaa ||8||
Nanak says! The attainment of the Divine Name (Naam) is granted only to that person on whom the Lord has ordained his blessing down.
tero sevak ieh ra(n)g maataa ||
O Lord! Your servant (forsaking all other worldly rituals) remains completely intoxicated only in this color of Your Love.
bhio kirapaal dheen dhukh bha(n)jan har har keeratan ih man raataa || rahaau dhoojaa ||1||3||
The Merciful Lord, the Destroyer of the pains of the humble, has become compassionate; now, this mind of mine is forever imbued with the singing of the praises (Kirtan) of the Divine. Contemplate! Second.
